Gaute Gjelsten Appointed to Lead Maritime Law Commission

Oslo, August 2025

Our partner, Gaute Gjelsten, has been appointed by the Norwegian government to lead a new law commission focused on modernising Norway’s maritime regulatory framework.

The law commission’s mandate is to review existing maritime legislation and propose amendments reflecting developments in the industry, including digitalisation, green transition, and evolving safety standards.

Gaute’s appointment is a recognition of his expertise in maritime law and his longstanding commitment to the sector.

In a press release from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, it is emphasised that an updated maritime regulatory framework is important for ensuring that Norway remains a leading maritime nation:

- Norwegian ships should be attractive workplaces, and access to Norwegian maritime expertise is of great importance - not only from a security and emergency preparedness perspective, but also for the continued development of the Norwegian maritime cluster, says Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, Marianne Sivertsen Næss.
